Bone Series

When our friends at POC wanted to extend their business of highly innovative protective ski gear to include products for off-road/downhill bicycling they came to us for advice.

How do you transfer the unique form language from the POC-ski segment to a new product area like downhill bicycling? At Howl, we have a passion for all kinds of sports and having closely followed the evolution of the POC brand over the years it was natural for us to extend their brand DNA to this new range of products.

The research which contained a hefty amount of km in the dirt tracks and the usual downhill-related bruises, left a few obstacles to overcome. The main challenge was to combine maximum mobility of legs and arms with a second to skin fit and a high degree of protection. The process involved a number of concepts and mock ups for testing and finally these challenges were turned into a number of innovative features such as elastomer protection between the moulds, viscoelastic material on the shin-guards, to maximize mobility and keep them in place, as well as quick-lock and self-adjusting straps.

The Series was awarded both Red Dot and Eurobike/IF Award in 2008. This range of products where developed in a close co-operation with POC.
